A Tradition of Care
At the age of nineteen, Brigid Teresa McCrory left her family in Ireland
to become a Little Sister of the Poor. Her special love and compassion for the
aged became apparent as she valued the sacredness of life, from conception to
death. Through her work with the Little Sisters of the Poor, Sr. Angeline
envisioned an alternative care for the aged. However, at that time, Sr.
Angeline's vision was not viable within the European customs of the Little
Sisters of the Poor.
After much prayer, as well as advice and counsel from Cardinal Hayes of New
York, Sr. Angeline and six other Sisters left their community of the Little
Sisters of the Poor to establish a new congregation which was to become known as
the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm
The Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm
have provided over 55 years of spiritually motivated care for the elderly of
Columbus.
St. Raphael's Home was founded in 1948 and
St. Rita's Home was opened a year later. The Villas at St. Therese Independent
and Assisted Living were established in 1998. Our new facility is located next
door, creating a continuum of care in a central campus-like setting. The St.
Therese Retreat Center is also located on campus.
Construction of our new state-of-the art facility began several years ago and
was completed in the spring of 2005. Mother Angeline McCrory Manor was named in
honor of the Foundress of the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm. When
St. Rita's and Raphael's closed many residents chose to transfer to the new
facility.
The tradition of spiritually motivated care continues to thrive in an
environment and atmosphere of home. The design of our new 147 bed facility
reflects the Sister's philosophy of providing a residential and
non-institutional environment.
